ABOUT THE BAND

Young Blue Envy

BIO:

Blue Envy was formed in Rochester, New York in the summer of 2016. Starting out as a four-piece under the name Freeway, the young bandmates often got together after school to play songs by their favorite artists, including Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and The Who. The group’s guitarist Andrew Young used his blues-inspired playing to help define the early sound of the band. After graduating high school in 2018, the band's lead singer departed, leaving Young to assume the role of vocalist, along with his guitar duties. Now a trio, the band changed its name to Blue Envy and focused on writing original material.

Bassist Nick Lenhard and drummer Stephen Coleman worked hard to form a solid rhythm section that focused on groove and feel. Lenhard also sought to add keyboards to diversify the band’s sound. The band channeled it's influences to create a raw, hard rock and blues-based sound that increasingly inched towards the progressive realm. Throughout 2019, Blue Envy played anywhere and everywhere that would have them, all while continuing to hone their sound during rehearsals. Popular Rochester venues, such as Bug Jar, Photo City Music Hall, Rosen Krown (now Bar Bad Ending), and B-Side (Fairport, NY), served as a launch pad and testing ground for the band's material. By the end of that year, they had begun building a following and decided to hit the studio, which resulted in their first EP - Shipwreck. This debut release showcased the fusion of influences that helped make up the band’s distinctive early sound.

During 2021, the band continued performing around upstate NY and writing new material. This is also the the period during which all three members were finishing college and working day jobs. Their  single, "Dying Star", came out in July of that year, which features a solo by Abram Collier on baritone sax. As heard on the recording, the band started to become increasingly experimental, while still retaining their focus on feel. While having unlimited access to the Nazareth College recording studio, the band started recording their second EP, Hand That Feeds, which would be released on 2/22/22. This EP represented a new level of ambition and experimentation for the band, with more keyboards, percussion and recently-learned production techniques.
